Leslie Ray Cox, Sr., beloved son of the late Reverend Johnnie R. Cox and Ida Ore Cox, was born on May 18, 1943, in Washington, North Carolina. Affectionately known as “Les”—was grounded in faith, family, and service, values that shaped the remarkable life he lived. Les attended Pitt County Public Schools and graduated from C.M. Eppes High School in 1961. Soon after, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. Over a distinguished 20-year career, Les served honorably both overseas and stateside, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. His service reflected excellence, discipline, and integrity, and he was awarded the Air Force Meritorious Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. While serving, he furthered his education by earning an Associate Degree in Applied Science from the Community College of the Air Force, a degree in Liberal Arts from Saint Leo College, and he also attended Pitt Community College. Following his military retirement, Les continued his commitment to hard work and service, spending 18 years as a Sales Associate with Heilig-Meyers Furniture Company in Greenville, North Carolina before retiring in March 2000. A man of deep faith, Les was a devoted member of York Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served faithfully in numerous capacities. His service included Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Peacher Steward, Missionary, Class Leader, Coordinator of the Men’s Fellowship, and member of the Male Choir. His dedication to the church reflected his love for God and his desire to uplift others. Les’ commitment extended far beyond the church walls. He was actively involved in the community, serving as Adjutant of American Legion Post 160, a life member of DAV Chapter #7230, and a longtime DAV Van Driver, generously giving his time to help fellow veterans. He also served as Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President of the Pitt–Greenville Sertoma Club and as Treasurer of the Pitt County Branch of the NAACP. His pride and love for Eppes High School were unmistakable. Les devoted countless hours to preserving its legacy, serving as Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee for the GIHS–Eppes Alumni Association, Treasurer for the GIHS–Eppes High School Alumni Heritage Society, and President for the Pitt County Chapter of GIHS–Eppes High School. He also served his city as a member of the Affordable Housing Loan Committee for the City of Greenville, always striving to improve the lives of others. Les was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Cherry Hester Cox, his eldest son, Leslie R. Cox, Jr., and sister, Johnnie Mae Cox. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 11 years, Patricia Freeman Cox; his devoted mother, Ida Ore Cox of Winterville; his children, Barron A. Cox of Hampton, VA, Trenita Cox Rogers of Greenville, NC, and Reginald T. Cox (Michelle) of Upper Marlboro, MD. He was a proud and loving grandfather to six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Aricia Cox, Brandon Cox, Leslie R. Cox III, April Cox, Erica Rogers, Kayla Cox, Skylar Cox, Kenji Mitchell, III, and Kase Mitchell. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Rev. Randolph Cox (Lucy), Cody Cox (Rose), James Cox (Sandra), Leon Cox (Martha), Joel Cox (Sarah), Ida Cox, Linda Cox Murphy (Rev. Melvin Murphy), Evelyn Cox Langley (Clifton), along with a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
