Psalms 91: 1-2 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Mr. George Brown peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal rest on Friday, April 17, 2026. He was born on October 29, 1938, in Pitt County, North Carolina, to the late Dixie “Tony” Brown and the late Ethel Worthington Brown. George attended Pitt County Schools and was a proud graduate of C.M. Eppes High School, Class of 1959. Following graduation, he relocated to New York to pursue employment, where he worked as an inspector at Grand Central Railroad Station in New York, New York. After many years, he returned to Greenville, North Carolina, where he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Gainer Brown. A devoted man of faith, George was a dedicated member of Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He faithfully served on the Senior Usher Ministry and was an active member of the Male Chorus. George was employed at Empire Brush, Inc., where he retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service. He took pride in his work in the maintenance department and enjoyed coaching the Empire Brush intramural basketball team. He was deeply committed to service and brotherhood. George was a member of Mt. Calvary Lodge #669, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Masons of North Carolina; Rofelt Pasha Temple #175, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine (A.E.A.O.N.M.S.); and the PHA Oasis of Rocky Mount Desert of North Carolina. George loved and cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed engaging in lively political discussions with anyone willing to converse. He was a member and top bowler of the East Carolina AMF Bowling League. He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving wife, Barbara Gainer Brown of the home; sons, Stephen Maurice Brown (Daisy) of Greenville, North Carolina, and Kevin Gerard Brown of Hyde County; and daughter, Shandua Brown Ellis (Reginald) of Raleigh, North Carolina; several godchildren, two of whom he reared in his home—Thelma Walston of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Meta Northern of Greenville, North Carolina; brothers, Lester Brown (Emma) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Donald Taft (Katie) of Greenville, North Carolina; sister, Betty Gardner of Virginia Beach, Virginia; cousin he grew up with as his sibling, Dalton Alvin Worthington of Portland, Oregon, along with a host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends who mourn his passing and carry on his legacy.
