    Ms. Lillie Monroe Reid

    November 30, 1934 - February 6, 2022

    In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make donations to Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church in the name of Lillie Reid for the purchase of a defibrillator. It was 1934, shortly after Thanksgiving in Rowland, North Carolina when Willie and Cilla Monroe celebrated the birth of their first girl and second of nine children. She departed this life Sunday, February 6, 2022. Lillie was quite energetic, always full of mischief and fun. It was while working on the farm that Lillie decided education was imperative for herself, as well as her siblings. After graduating from Southside High School in Rowland, North Carolina Lillie attended Fayetteville State University and earned a BS degree in Elementary Education. She graduated from Fayetteville State and moved to Greenville, North Carolina to begin her teaching career with Pitt County Schools. She pursued certification in Library Science at North Carolina Central University. She was fondly remembered as a passionate librarian at Pitt County Schools with 30 years of dedicated service. After retirement, she assisted in the establishment of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church Childcare Center and served as a board member. Later she opened and operated The Children’s Learning Tree Childcare Center and Billie’s Daycare Center for fifteen years in Greenville, North Carolina. Lillie was married to Charles W. Reid who preceded her in death. Together they opened and operated Occasional Delights Catering Service, providing hospitality for local businesses, weddings and church events. After the death of her parents, she reared her brothers and sisters and was instrumental in their educational degrees. She was an active member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a former member of the Board of Trustees, church treasurer, former Sunday School teacher and vacation Bible School teacher. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Girl Scout Leader, a den mother for the Cornerstone Cub Scout Troop, a member of Fayetteville State Alumni Association and a member of the Pitt County Retired Teachers Association. Lillie was a Chief Judge Voter Registrar for Greenville Precincts. Lillie was preceded in death by her adopted son, Cedric Reid; siblings, Geneva Richardon of Cleveland, OH and James Monroe of Rowland, NC; son in law, Billy Walls; sisters in law Eliza Watson and Mabel Jones of Surry, VA; brothers in law, Reuben Reid (Paige) of Landover, MD, George Reid (Dollie) and Roger Reid of Hampton, VA; Marquette Edge of Paterson, NJ, Henry Moore of Greensboro, NC; and a special friend, Ervin Streeter. Lillie leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Charetta Walls, Greenville, North Carolina, two granddaughters Billie N. Walls of Raleigh, NC; Crystal Swain of Greenville, NC; sisters, Gladys Edge of Paterson, NJ, Alberta Monroe of Paterson, NJ, Willa M. Godley of Greensboro, NC, LouCilla Moore of Greensboro, NC; brothers, Dr. Joseph Monroe (Sallie) of Greensboro, NC, Dallas Monroe (Eleanor) of Marion SC; sisters in law, Louise Monroe of Rowland, NC, Martha Works and Maggie Reid, of Hampton VA, Edith DeLoatch of Portsmouth, VA; brother in law, Garland Reid (Jacinta) of Mitchellville, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
