A processional will take place on Friday, June 5 at 2:30pm at CM Eppes 400 Nash Street going to Greenwood Cemetery on 5th Street, Greenville, NC. “ The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” Psalms 23 The man we know as Johnny Arthur Wooten, was born to the late Johnny A. Wooten, Sr. and Pinky Forbes Wooten on February 22, 1932. He departed this life on Saturday, May 30, 2020. Known to many as “Polo”, Johnny was reared in Pitt County, NC where he attended Pitt County Schools and graduated from his beloved CM EPPES High School. Johnny then continued his education enrolling at North Carolina College at Durham, where he majored in Music and minored in French. While attending NCC, Johnny crossed the Burning Sands to OMEGA LAND, pledging “The Mighty” Tau Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Johnny furthered his postgraduate education at North Carolina A&T State University. Now, a young educator, he embarked on his profession as a band director in Laurel Hill, NC. In 1956, his career truly blossomed when he accepted opportunity as Band Director at his beloved CM EPPES. Johnny’s return resulted in 30 plus years of Service with Pitt County Schools. On August 25, 1957, Johnny married his Queen, Althea R. Duncan. They shared 63 years of marriage together. To this union, there were two children, Andre’ and Michael. Johnny was a Lifetime member of York Memorial AME Zion Church, where he was Minister of Music for decades until his health failed and he could no longer see but he continued to attend Sunday services for as long as his health allowed. Johnny was an active member in the community. The actives included, but were not limited to, Founding the CM EPPES Alumni Parade which will celebrate its 41st Anniversary this year and the Annual Christmas Concert with the Pitt County Mass Choir. Johnny loved anything involving Music. After music, Johnny loved his FRATERNITY OMEGA PSI PHI! He Bled PURPLE and GOLD, Q PSI PHI Till the day I die! Johnny leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Althea D. Wooten of 63 years; children and Godchildren, Andre Wooten (Kima) of Greenvile, NC, Michael Wooten of Raleigh, NC, Quency Hawkins (Nicole) of Greenville, NC, Gwendolyn Speight Holman (Jimmy) of Chesapeak, VA, Ann Speight Smith (Paul) of Greenvile, NC, Cheryl Speight Walters of Greenvile, NC, Lawerence Speight Jr of Norfolk, VA, Monique Hutcheson (Rodney) of Raleigh, NC, Seadra McCullough (Andrew) of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Christopher Brown (Courtney) of Charlotte, NC , Montrell Wooten of Washington,DC, Kayla Wooten of Riverview, FL, Alexis Wooten of Greensboro, NC; sisters, Gerldine Duncan of Mitchville, MD, Clemintine McDougal of Raleigh, NC, Evelyn Boyd of Greenville, NC; a host of special nieces, nephews, and loved ones who call him Bruh.
