Ms. Velma Bee Langley, a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, was born on October 14, 1938, to the late David and Susie Langley. She was raised in Pitt County, North Carolina, and received her early education at Whitfield High School in Grimesland, where she excelled both academically and athletically, proudly representing her school on the basketball team. After graduating, Velma attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, where she furthered her education and prepared for a lifetime of dedication to hard work, service, and family. In 1964, she relocated to Washington, D.C. and began a distinguished career with 8 O’Clock Coffee. For over three decades, she faithfully served the company, earning the admiration of her colleagues through her exceptional work ethic, steadfast loyalty, and warm personality. During her years in the city, she built deep and lasting friendships with both neighbors and co-workers. In 2001, Velma returned to her beloved Pitt County to lovingly care for her mother and brother—a role she embraced with grace and commitment for the next 20 years. Her life was a shining example of selflessness, compassion, and unwavering devotion to family. Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Susie and David Langley; her sisters, Betsy White, Louise Johnson, and Annie Mae Langley; her brothers, Wilton Langley, June Langley, Noah Langley, and Moses Langley; and her beloved only son, Wade Plater. Wade was the pride and joy of her life and her closest companion. The deep love she held for him was evident to all, shining through her words, her actions, and the affection she so generously shared with her grandchildren. She leaves to cherish her memory her two beloved grandsons, Wilton and Gregory Langley, whom she cared for as if they were her own children. Velma’s love for “her boys” was boundless—together they shared countless laughs, precious memories, and a bond that was unbreakable. Inseparable in life, their hearts will remain forever united. Velma is also survived by two sisters, Mamie Reese of Washington, D.C., and Doris Berry of Baltimore, Maryland; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts. A faithful servant of the Lord, Velma was a member of Sycamore Chapel Baptist Church for more than thirty years under the leadership of Pastor B. T.
