Mrs. Shirley Stancil

Shirley Gray Jackson Latham Stancil was born June 21, 1937, in Robersonville, North Carolina, to Bert Jackson Little and Harvey Newton. She attended Parmele High School and later earned her GED at Martin Community College. Shirley was married to Josephus Latham, Jr. for almost 50 years until his death in 2003. She had four daughters and a son of whom she was so proud. In 2013, Shirley married William “Poole” Stancil whom she adored. Shirley was committed to her church family, Macedonia Baptist Church, and often visited Higher Hope Ministries and Rock Hill Baptist Church. For many years, she was a domestic worker, worked in a sewing factory and other factories including Beaunit, Jefferson Mills, and Hallmark. She earned a Home Management Certificate at Martin Community College and began a career of taking care of others. Finally, to complete her lifelong goal, she returned to Martin Community College and earned a certificate to become a cosmetologist. Then she became an entrepreneur, opening the “Golden Touch” hair salon in Robersonville. There she delightedly and professionally augmented the looks of many for years. Also, she was a member of Chapter 27 Cosmetology Association. The most significant certificate that she received was “World’s Greatest Mother” presented on May 10, 1981, by her only son, Anthony. Traveling, playing “Old Maid” cards and Bingo, reading the Bible and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her much joy. She loved to visit Florida and to go on cruises. The most enjoyable one for her was a cruise to the Bahamas with her mother. Shirley spent much time reading the Bible until she became ill. Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Anthony “Lakeside”; mother, Bert J. Little; father, Harvey Newton; brothers, J.C. Congleton, Clayton Jackson, James Jackson, and James House; sisters, Carol Brandon and Linda Newton; stepsons, Larry and William Stancil; and stepdaughters, Patricia and Shirley Stancil. Shirley leaves to sustain her legacy a loving and devoted husband, William Stancil; daughters, Vickie Presley (Tyrone), Port Orange, FL; Winifred Williams (Dillon), Williamston, NC; Avis Wilkinson (Victor) Ft. Lauderdale, FL; JoAnne Brown (Irving), Williamston, NC; stepdaughters, Leoria S.
