Isiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you: do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Mrs. Sandra Jones McLawhorn transitioned from earthly labor to her heavenly reward on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at Vidant Health. She was born September 17, 1948, to Thelma Rollins Jones and the late Herbert Bruce Jones, Sr. Sandra attended St. Gabriel’s Catholic School and Mother Mercy High School in Washington, NC. She received a GED followed by a Nursing Assistant certificate from Pitt Community College. Sandra also earned her certificate in Childhood Education from Pitt Community College. Sandra started her career as a Nursing Assistant at Pitt Memorial Hospital and Dr. Andrew Best’s office of Family Practice. Afterward, Sandra worked as a Teacher’s Assistant at GR Whitfield Elementary School. Sandra also worked at Grady White Boats and at Vermont America. She then started her entrepreneurship career as owner and operator of the Mac’s Variety Store, followed by the Carolina Grill Café and finally as owner and operator of Sandra Tons of Love Daycare, LLC. She found her God-given passion through Sandra Tons of Love Daycare where she gave hundreds of children a start in their educational and social foundation before retirement. Sandra was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church prior to joining Mt. Calvary FWB Church. At Mt. Calvary she was affiliated with Voices of Calvary choir and attended the Prayer Meetings regularly. She was also a member of Ladies Delight Chapter #10 Order of Eastern Star. She leaves cherished memories with her loving husband, County Commissioner Melvin C. McLawhorn of the home; daughter, Sharon McLawhorn McNeil (Leo) of Greenville, NC; son, Melvin C. McLawhorn II (Dr. Netasha) of Wake Forest, NC; sisters, Linda Barrett (James) of Greenville, NC; Yvonne Williams (Ronald) of Cary, NC; Cara Jones of Raleigh, NC; brothers, Herbert Bruce Jones Jr. of Greenville, NC; Edron “Monte” Teel (Sandra) of Jacksonville, FL, and Jeffrey Jones of Greenville, NC; grandchildren, Joshua, Melvin III and Gavin McLawhorn of Wake Forest, NC; and Logan McNeil of Greenville, NC; goddaughter, Kianna Barrett; and Delois Waltower, responsible for introducing Sandra and Melvin nearly 60 years ago, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
