Ms. Peggie Kearney

On April 9, 2024 at Wake Medical Center, in Raleigh, North Carolina, the heavenly bound train stopped by to pick up Peggie Joyce Mizelle Kearney. Peggie was born into the loving home of the late Johnnie and Minnie Bell Little Mizelle on February 7, 1935. While growing up in a loving home with her parents, sister and brothers, she attended the public schools of Martin County, North Carolina where she graduated from W.C. Chance High School. She later graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers College, which later became Winston-Salem State University. On Sundays she could be found at Belmont Baptist Church which could be seen from the house. Later in life she married the late Rev. James Enoch Kearney on October 19, 1956, and they were blessed with two sons, whom she loved dearly. A life-long educator, Peggie also studied at North Carolina Central University, and educated many students in the Martin County, Franklin County and Vance County school systems. She also taught adult education at Vance County Technical Institute which is now a Community College. She retired as a Librarian from the Vance County school system in 1993. After retirement, Peggie spent more time working in her church, St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Louisburg, NC and in the Synod of the Presbyterian Church in North Carolina and nationally. Peggie truly loved the Lord and her family. Peggie also enjoyed working in her community through the organizations, in which she was a part of. She was a member of the Minister’s Wives and Widows Organization, which she founded in Franklin County and Vicinity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the Daughters of Isis, Order of the Eastern Star, and the WSSU Rams Club of Vance County. Even though over the past few years she could not attend meetings and work in her organizations, she stayed in contact with them, and stayed abreast of the work they were doing in these organizations. Peggie was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James Enoch Kearney; parents, Johnnie and Minnie Bell Little Mizelle; a sister, Marylee Mizelle Hassell and a brother, Leon Fernando Mizelle; a special friend, Clarence Williams. Peggie is survived by her sons, Reginald (Tina), Roderick; stepchildren, Helen and James Jr.; brother, Johnnie Eugene (Gloria); grandchildren, Joshua (Kelly), Taylor, Nikita, Steven, and Derrick, Hakeem; great-grandchildren, Tayja, Laila Kearney, Joshua Jr., Jaxson, Alyssa, Talive, Jaidan, and Laila Parker; nieces, Johnita, Kristi (George), Latrice, Susan (Daniel), Marie; nephews, Eric (Jan Michele), Leonard and Leon Jr.; great nieces, London and Georgia, and a host of family and friends. She is also survived by many special family members and friends of the community, who took time from their busy schedules to take care of “Ms. Peggie” as they called her. Roderick and Reginald are thankful for these special people who could have turned their backs on her, but they stuck with “Ms. Peggie” when she lived at home.
