Mother Mattlyon Staton departed this life on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 2:00PM. She was born on December 12, 1945 to the late Lonnie and Willie B. Slade Roberson in Robersonville, NC. Mattlyon was the eighth of nine children and was educated in the North Carolina Public Schools. Mattlyon, better known as “Matt” and “Aunt Matt” was definitely a woman of great character and statue. As a young woman growing up in the rural areas of Martin County, she carried herself with pride, dignity, and lots of fun. Everyone loved her humor, kindness, and friendship. Matt was also known as one of the best dancers around. She taught her baby brother Ronnie how to dance and drive. As a young woman she courted and married Wilbur Staton who loved her dearly. They were two peas in a pod, each one complimenting the other. After graduating from high school, Matt began her working career at Sampson Shirt Factory for eight months. She continued her work history with West Point Pepperell for twenty seven years as an Inspector. Matt accepted Christ at an early age at Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Parmele, NC. She was a faithful servant, sang in the choir, served in the kitchen and was on the Mother Board. Matt loved her church family and they loved her too. Matt had a very special love for her Pastor, Samuel Chance and First Lady, Anna Chance. They were always there for her, before, during, and after her illness. Matt was the “Matriarch” of the family! Everybody loved coming to her home where she entertained them with laughter, funny stories and great food. You could never come to her home without being offered good home style cooking, plates to take home, don’t even mention the chicken pot pie, which one would live to die for. Mattlyon was preceded in death by her siblings, Bernice Briley, Margie Henderson, Elder James Curtis Roberson, Joseph Roberson, Samuel T. Roberson, and Annie V. Cherry. Matt leaves to mourn, her loving husband of fifty one years, Trustee Wilbur Staton; two sons, Timothy and Wilbur, Jr.; one daughter, Sheila; three grandchildren, Madison, Jasmine, and Nicholas; one sister, Gladys Briley of Upper Marlboro, MD; one brother, Ronald Roberson (Maxine) of Brooklyn, NY; a devoted nephew, Donnie Briley; a devoted niece, which she raised as her own, Phyllis Roberson; a loving and devoted mother-in-law, Winnie Staton Harrell (Henry) deceased; nine sisters-in-law, Annie Schwartz (Choyce), Shirley Parker (Vincent), Louise Weathersbe (Steve), Carolyn Harrell, Anita Beach (Curtis), Teresa Best (Johnny), Gracie Harrell, Gail Ruffin, Yvette Ruffin; four brothers-in-law; Winsor, Donnell, Henry, Gary; a spiritual friend, Brenda Lee; two special friends, Hazel Davis and Diane Cherry; two dear riding partners, Ann Coppage, Don Grimes; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends, Matt will forever be remembered by her favorite saying, “Bad Boy”, ‘Puddin Puddin”, “Baby” and “I Luv You”.
