Ms. Mamie Gardner

On January 10, 2016, God called home one of his angels. Mamie Ruth Atkinson Gardner, 92, was called to her reward while at the Red Oak Manor Assisted Living home in Greenville, North Carolina. Mamie Ruth was born on June 13, 1923 in Belvoir, North Carolina. She was one of four children born to the late James and Gatsy Atkinson. She received her education through the Pitt County Public Schools. She was married to the late George Leslie Gardner, Sr. and from that union they were blessed with three children. Mamie Ruth was a dedicated employee for the City of Greenville where she worked diligently at West Greenville gym as a domestic care taker until she retired. Mamie Ruth was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and a longtime member of Sycamore Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was a very stylish woman who loved to wear her church hats. She enjoyed feeding the hungry, clothing the needy and visiting the sick. Mamie Ruth was always answering God's call by operating in her spiritual gift of giving. She found joy in giving to others whether it was sweet potato pies, handkerchiefs or anything she could find. Mamie Ruth spent her life being a blessing to others. And of course if you ever needed a good conversation she was always ready to talk and talk and talk. She always looked forward to family visits from those who were near or far. She took great pride in spending time with those she loved and fulfilling her role as the Matriarch of the family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, George L. Gardner, Jr.; a sister, Beatrice L. Atkinson; two brothers, Jarvis Dunn and Walter Atkinson. Mamie Ruth leaves fond memories in the hearts of her children, James A. Gardner, Durham, NC and Lila V. Knox (William), New Haven, CT; five grandchildren, Kendall Daniels, Greenville, NC; Derrick Knox, New Haven, CT; Monica Cooper (Cleo), Raleigh, NC; L. Joi Gardner, Durham, NC; a devoted grandson who served her endlessly, James Todd Gardner, Wilson, NC; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Emma Dixon, Greenville, NC; Jeanette Dunn, Brooklyn, NY; a special niece, Angela Berry (Troy), Waldorf, MD; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
