Tributes

Our angel, Lorraine Diggins Carman was born March 30, 1928 to the late John and Alberta Diggins in Pitt County. She was the oldest of her parents’ two daughters. Lorraine departed this earthly life on August 27, 2024 at her last earthly home in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Lorraine spent her childhood in Penny Hill, Falkland and Hwy 43 North-Rock Springs surrounded by her parents, grandmother, sister and cousins that were reared as siblings. Sweet Lorraine as she was affectionally called by some or Lo as she was called by others was a happy child that spent most of her childhood attached to her grandmother, Alvania Slade, whom she affectionally called Momma. Momma was her protector and Lorraine often referenced Momma’s love for her. When talking about Momma she would tell you, “I know Momma loved me.” She attended and graduated from Pitt County Schools. After high school graduation she married James Sherrod and relocated to Washington, DC where she started her family, and three daughters were born. After living years in Washington, DC she returned to North Carolina. Lorraine married for a second time to Charles Lindbergh Carman and to this union were born one daughter and three sons. She was a homemaker with the exception of tobacco season when she worked in the local warehouses. As a homemaker she was available to her children, grandchildren and their friends. Lorraine loved her home and her children as well as playing board games (being an expert at Scrabble and Monopoly), cards, slot games on her tablet, bingo as well as watching soap operas by day and game shows by night. She loved flowers and spent countless hours planting and nurturing them. Lorraine loved kids and was the babysitter for many of her cousins when she was younger. She carried that love of kids until her death. Lorraine was reared with cousins that were akin to brothers and sisters and taught her children the sense of family from that experience. Family over everything was what she purposed in her children. After the death of her husband, Lindbergh she started a new life in Hallandale Beach, Florida. She spent the last fourteen years there loving her new home and with four of her seven children nearby. All of which assisted in her care until her death. She was preceded in by her husband of 47 yrs Charles Lindbergh Carman, Sr; her parents, her sister, Virginia Diggins Evans; her cousins reared as siblings, Leander Vines, Henry (Joe) Vines, Jr., Lucurtis White, Earl White, Marty White, and Allie White Murphy; four aunts that were instrumental in her life, Lucy Hunter, Carrie Williams, Earline Harris and Mable “Sis” White; her two nephews, Clifford and Ronald Harris; niece, Lisa Winston Jumper; stepson, Larry E. Williams. She leaves to mourn her death, Lola Faye Wanzer of the home, Shelby Sherrod Bussey of Greenville, NC, Tammy D. Sherrod of Greenville, NC, Mary Carman Batts of Washington, NC, Charles L. Carman, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Curtis E. Carman of Hallandale Beach, Florida, and Gordon T. Carman of the home; a stepson, Lindbergh Morris of Raleigh, NC; her cousins reared as siblings, John B. Slade (Margie) of Washington, DC, Laforest Falkner of Silver Springs, MD, James “Pop” Vines of Washington, DC, Marilyn Yarrell of Greenville, NC, Cornelius “Bubba” White of Greenville, NC; a sister-in-law, Cornelia Jetter (Samuel) of Philadelphia, PA; her grandchildren, Eric Lamar Taylor, Jamie Terrell Wanzer, David Earl “Dejai” Taylor Jr., Lakeisha Lorraine “Keisha” Taylor, Kevin Lindbergh Taylor and Joshua Sherrod Prince; her great grandchildren, Mariah, Tynesha, Davion, Davontae, Tristen, Johniah, Christian, Arriona, Nicholas, Kiyren and Alexander; nieces and nephews, Karen Seidler of Philadelphia, PA, Bonnie Jamison Berry of Philadelphia, PA, Robert Edney (Paula) of New York, Gerald Clark (Fai) of California, Robert Carmon, Jr. (Robin) of Greensboro, NC, Mary Eastman (Ray) of Cary, NC, Paula Carmon Ousley of Greensboro, NC, Teresa Jetter of Philadelphia, PA, Valerie Jetter Harris (Jeffrey) of Cheltenham, PA, Donna Jetter Faison of Cheltenham, PA, Samuel Jetter, Jr. (Monica) of Williamstown, New Jersey, Debra Winston of Baltimore, MD, Frank Winston of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and her eight wonder, Carol Lee Ware (James) of Herndon, VA; she leaves numerous other relatives to include a devoted cousin, Edith Pierce of Greenville, NC who faithfully called her weekly. Lastly, a special mention for her oldest living friend, Hazel Anderson of Greenville, NC.
