Mr. Joe Freeman Atkinson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Joe Freeman Atkinson a Pitt County native was born on June 7, 1956 to Mildred Atkinson. Joe departed this life on August 6, 2015 at the home he loved and grew up in, 1202 South Greene Street, Greenville, NC. Joe attended the Greenville City/Pitt County Schools. He graduated in 1974 from J.H. Rose High School. Joe started work right after high school by obtaining employment with Fieldcrest Mills/Mohawk Industries. He was a loyal employee for twenty-seven years, working his way up to textile machine fixer position and lead person. Joe only stopped work under doctor’s orders. Joe may be best know as the founding creator of the Newtown Community Reunion Cookout which was originally Called Joe’s Newtown Cookout. As an event planner he was dedicated to making successful cookouts pouring his heart into each year. He looked forward to bringing Newtown current and former residents as well as descendants together seeing everyone eating, socializing, catching up, enjoying themselves and being happy. He loved this area that he grew up in and could be seen walking thru the neighborhood with his dog “T” everyday. He is known to be helpful, caring, generous, wise, kind, loving, and a jack of all trades. Joe is known and loved by many, many people and they all end their remarks about him by saying, “He is a good guy.” Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joe Freeman Hyman; his brother, Albert Benson, Sr. Joe leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Mildred Atkinson of the hoome; one daughter, Kimberly Atkinson of Miami, FL; two sons, Aaron Atkinson, Jamel Atkinson both of Greenville, NC; one sister, Patricia McKelvey of Bronx, NY; two brothers, Robert Atkinson (Sadie) of Clinton, MD, Wilbert Atkinson (Beatrice) of Greenville, NC, a nephew who was like a brother, Albert Benson, Jr. (Amy) of Hiisborough, NC; his best friend, who was like a brother, James “Pete” Dixon (Allison) of Simpson, NC, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
