Ms. Harriet Bacon

Mrs. Harriet Palmer Bacon, affectionately known as “Mother”, was born on December 16, 1921 to Evelyn Singelton and Friday Kershaw in Horatio, SC. She was called home on August 29, 2014 in Greenville, NC. As a young girl, “Mother” along with her family, relocated from Sumter, SC to Philadelphia, PA. “Harriet” obtained her High School Diploma from the Philadelphia, PA School System. During World War II, she worked as a seamstress in the military factories making parachutes for the U.S. Navy in Philadelphia, PA, but, later retired from the U.S. Navy Shipyard in Lakehurst, NJ as a head payroll clerk. “Mother” was baptized at West Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. She was also a member of Deliverance Evangelistic Church of Burlington, NJ and is presently a member of Victory Christian Assembly of Greenville, NC, where she served as one of the Mothers of the church. Her favorite scriptures are the Psalms of David. “Mother” married the late Weston Bacon of Philadelphia, PA in 1938. “Mother” made her final residence in Greenville, NC, along with her two adult daughters and their families in 1991. “Mother” really enjoyed gardening, especially cutting her grass and pulling up weeds. “Mother” was taught by her grandmother how to knit, crochet and sew. She could copy styles of clothing off store mannequins and pictures without patterns. “Mother” always loved family gatherings especially watching her grandkids dance to James Brown’s “Make It Funky”. She also loved her neighbors, her community and was the Block Captain for the Cambridge Neighborhood Block Watch Association for several years. “Mother” gave to her family, friends and special charities that were committed to children. “Mother” was preceded in death by two grandsons; Gregory Sutton and Richard Ferguson. “Mother” leaves to mourn; two daughters, Evelyn Ferguson & Papinta (Pattie) McFaddin both of Greenville, NC; five grandchildren, Michael Lomax of New Orleans, LA, Kelvin Sutton, Carol Hunter, Wanda Williams, Toni Denise McFaddin all of Greenville, NC; sixteen great-grandchildren, twelve great-great grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends. ******** “Mother” loved the Lord and had a heart of gold.
