On the evening of February 4, 2026, our beloved Gloria “Glo” Jean Wallace went home to be with the Lord at the age of 93, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well-lived. Born on May 15, 1932, in Everetts, NC, to the late James (Jimmy) Wallace and Annie H. Wallace, Gloria grew up in a Christian home where she was nurtured in the values of faith, family, and community. Gloria's life was a testament to her devotion to her family and her faith. She was an active and dedicated member of Lily of the Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Everetts, NC, where she was baptized at the age of 12 on September 4, 1944. Throughout her life, she remained committed to her church family, singing in the choir, serving in various roles, including Assistant Secretary, Secretary of Sunday School, and Sunday School Teacher. Her love for the Lord and her community was evident in all that she did. Gloria began her career as a caregiver, which sparked her joy for working with others. She went on to have a rewarding 30-year career in the Martin County Public Schools system, making a lasting impact on the lives of countless children. She never met a child she didn’t like. At first sight, a baby would cause her face to light up and lift her spirits. Even with the most mischievous little ones, she showed the patience of Job. Many remember her as their first Sunday school teacher, guiding their young hearts with warmth and wisdom. She had a special way with children; they adored her. From her marriage with Joseph Woolard, who preceded her in death, was born one daughter, Tundra Woolard, whom they loved and cherished dearly. Gloria is remembered by her loving family, to include her three children, Linda Epps (Melvin), Larry Wallace, and Tundra Woolard; her five grandchildren, Melodee Johnson (Richard), Brandi Epps, Britney Rubio (Jordyn), and Whitney Cogdell (Franklin), Hope Harris (Scotty); her four great-grandchildren, Franklin Cogdell III, Camden Cogdell, Malcolm Johnson, and Lorrann Johnson; Goddaughter, Vonner Ford (Rudy) and her two brothers, Bennie Wallace, Everetts, NC, and Elton Wallace (Louise), Hassel, NC. She was also dearly loved by an enormous circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. One of 12 children, she was preceded in death by her parents, James (Jimmy) Wallace and Annie H. Wallace; brothers: W.C. Howell, James Wallace, Jr., Jeremiah Wallace, Murray Wallace, William Wallace, and Earl Wallace; sisters: Gertie Wallace, Julia Congleton, and Varah Hart-Clark. Gloria Wallace had a heart of gold. She loved family fiercely and cared for others naturally; she had a rare gift for connecting with people of all ages, cultures, and walks of life. If you sat at her table, whatever she had was yours—she'd let you eat right off her plate without a second thought. Her love knew no bounds; she worked hard and loved even harder, sometimes to her own detriment. A devoted matriarch and family historian, Gloria delighted in gatherings and frequently asked, “When is the next family reunion?” If you brought home someone new, she’d quickly let you know how you might be related. She could trace kinship between people with astonishing detail. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and her love for the Lord was genuine and unwavering. She lived her life in a way that reflected her values and principles, continuing to inspire those around her with her devotion well into her 90s. She loved Psalm 127, which speaks to the hallmark of her character. Sassy and fun, Gloria's passions and interests were many. She loved to travel, learn, and try new things. On a family trip to Disney World, she blended in with her friends, riding every ride like a teenager — and she enjoyed playfully sneaking up behind you and exclaiming in a faux deep voice, “Boo!” as a greeting. She had a keen eye for decorating and knew how to turn any space into a home. Food was another area where Gloria's love and generosity shone. She was a great cook who took her holiday menus seriously. She found joy in nature, especially birds - no Christmas tree was complete without a bird ornament. Gloria, who felt deeply, was also proud of being called a “Tough Cookie.” As a cancer survivor, she faced challenges with a twinkle in her eye and an open hand. Her sense of style was as vibrant as her spirit – bold and unapologetic. She loved her golden curls, her hoop earrings, and her signature cream corduroy pants. When it was time for a special occasion, she was dressed to impress with her trademark confidence on display. Gloria’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and connection. She leaves behind countless memories and the example of a life lived with arms wide open. Her quiet charm and steady strength will be deeply missed, but she will undeniably continue to inspire and uplift those who knew her.
