Tributes

Dorothy Simontina Cherry Jordan was born in Windsor, North Carolina and raised in Rich Square, North Carolina as the only child of Simon Peter and Dorothy Majette Cherry. She grew up among many family members and community leaders who instilled in her the love of God and of being of service to others. At First Baptist Church, she was nurtured and encouraged to be a steadfast and humble servant and to witness through her actions. Dorothy graduated from the historic W. S. Creecy High School and was awarded a Georgia Pacific Corporation Scholarship to attend the college of her choice. She selected East Carolina University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education and a Master of Education degree in Counseling. After earning her BS degree, she worked one year in the Department of Social Services in income maintenance before pursuing her career in Public Health Education. She ended her Public Health career as Director of Health Education at the Edgecombe County Health Department. She went on to work as School Counselor at Greene Central High School. At the time of her transition, she was employed as Director of TRIO/Student Support Services at Beaufort County Community College in Washington, North Carolina. She enjoyed empowering and encouraging her students as they strived to reach their educational and life goals. Dorothy served as a Deacon at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. She also served her church as a Deaconess, Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, choir member, Daughters of Glory Book Club leader, Rehabilitation Ministry team leader, Save our Sons/Save our Sisters youth ministry leader and board chairman of the Cornerstone Christian Child Development Center. Her affiliation with women’s service organizations began as a teen-age member of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. She was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated with thirty-eight years of service; an Associate member of the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., The Blessings Book Club and a charter member of the Greenville-Pitt County Area Section of NCNW. She had a heart for serving the community’s disenfranchised citizens and as a result helped to found the Beaufort County HIV/AIDS Service Network. She has received the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for her community service. Dorothy was an avid reader, and she loved spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoys the fellowship, book discussions, and the special bond with the ladies in the Daughters of Glory Book Club and Blessings Book Club. Mrs. Jordan is survived by her husband of forty-one years, Michael J. Jordan and the love of her life, her only daughter, Tatum Olivia of the home. She leaves to celebrate her legacy, several aunts, nieces, nephews, many special cousins, committed friends and associates. Mrs. Jordan believed that she was blessed to be a blessing and looked forward to each opportunity to do so. One of her favorite scriptures was Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.
