Mr. Demetrus Dixon

Demetrus Demond Dixon was born to Mark Dixon, Sr. and Freda Kay Artis on April 21, 1989 in Greenville, NC. He was the youngest of five children, having one sister and three brothers. Demetrus was born with one eye, but if you didn’t know him personally you would have never known or been able to tell a difference. However, a childhood incident caused his retina to detach and blinded young Demetrus completely with the possibility of never being able to see again. By the grace, mercy, and guidance of GOD Almighty, doctors were able to surgically re-attach his retina. Little D was blessed once more with the gift of sight. He could see again but it wasn’t the same. His vision was now tunnel vision and much worse than before, to the point that doctors declared him legally blind. But Little D’s determination didn’t let that stop him or slow him down. Throughout life Demetrus never complained or made excuses about his vision disability. Young Demetrus was raised in the D.H. Conley High School area on Manning Road with his two parents, one sister, and three brothers. Yes, he was a country boy. He attended Chicod School for grades kindergarten through eighth. At age fourteen his parents separated. Soon afterwards, Demetrus and his brothers, sister, and mother altogether moved to the inner city limits of Greenville. At South Central High School, Demetrus learned how to cook, clean, and be mobile with the help of a walking stick. When he was on the move he would run you right over if you got in his way. He got around so well that it was often hard to keep up with him, constantly telling him to slow down. After graduating from South Central High School in 2009, Demetrus enrolled at Pitt Community College. He had a love for healthy living, all styles of music, and artwork. Demetrus was a peacemaker. He never liked to see people argue or fight. In his free time he would read, write, philosophize, paint, draw, and do pottery work. He called it “throwing clay”. On May 9, 2012 Mr. Demetrus completed his Transfer Core Diploma in Arts and on the same day he received his Associates Degree in Arts from Pitt Community College. The following year on December 16, 2013, Little D completed his Associates Degree in General Education and transferred to East Carolina University. He was the youngest, yet the first out of his parents and four siblings to ever attend college and not only attend but also complete college, even with his vision disability. When help was needed, Demetrus was a name that almost always came to mind. He was always a giver and was often asked to help. He rarely said no unless you were just talking crazy. Just recently on May 5, 2017, Mr. Demetrus Dixon was awarded and received his Bachelor of Science in Public Health Studies with a concentration in Community Health. On June 17, 2017 his time on this earth was over and he left us, leaving an empty unfilled space in our lives with many questions but not answers. As a son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, cousin, and friend, we all loved him. We wish that we had known and we wish we would have done more. Demetrus completely excelled his expectations and was capable of so much more. We loved and will miss Demetrus. Rest in Peace. Demetrus was preceded in death by his grandparents, whom he loved dearly. Demetrus is survived by his father, Mark Dixon, Sr. (Barbara); his mother, Freda Kay Artis; sister, Lokeysha Dixon; three brothers, Mark Dixon, Jr., Linwood Dixon, Dominique Dixon; one step-sister, Kendra Gregg; two nephews, Jeremiah Bryant and Quamaine Singleton; eleven aunts, Cathy Moore (Timothy), Teresa McCotter (Micheal), Sherry Matthews (Paul), Mae Ella Artis Williams, Ethel Mae Dixon, Linda Richardson (Walter), Annie Dickens (Gary), Cardonia Coley (Melvin), Alice Dixon, Sophia Crandle (Alexander), Melissa Freeman (Terry), and Aunt/cousin, Mary Bridges; five uncles, Jimmie Lee Dixon, Stephen Dixon, Curtis Lee Dixon, Lester Dixon (Hattie), John Paul Dixon, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
