Mrs. Mildred Atkinson

Mrs. Mildred Davis Atkinson was born in Mullins, SC on April 4, 1919, to the late George Davis and Carmen Reaves Davis. She entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at her home, 1202 South Green Street, Greenville, NC. Mildred was reared in Mullins, SC where she attended public school and later was employed by the U. S. Navy during the second World War at U.S. Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. Mildred was awarded a Civilian Recognition of Service Certificate by the U.S. Navy in recognition of that service to the Navy and to the country on December 7, 1945. While there, she met and married her late husband, Robert Atkinson, Sr., and later they made their home in Greenville, NC. Mildred was a member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church for over fifty-eight years, where she attended faithfully, participating and volunteering in many church activities until her health would not allow her. Mildred loved the Lord and her church family. She carried that genuine love in her heart everyday and she would spread that ove and joy throughout the community in her normal everyday life to the many lives that she touched. Mildred is known for her friendly, loving, caring, giving and godly spirit for helping and uplifting others. Whether it was giving food, clothing, encouraging words, her time or just a kind word and a smile, she gave with a godly spirit of love. If you knew “Miss Mildred” in her latter years, you know that she had a fondness for butterscotch candy and that her favorite saying “give me a piece”, referring to (Butterscotch Candy). If you ever met her, you’ll always remember, “Miss Mildred”. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Atkinson, Sr.; two sons, Joe Atkinson and Albert Benson, Sr and eleven of her siblings. Mildred leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter, Patricia McKelvey of Bronx, NY; two sons, Robert Atkinson, Jr. (Sadie) of Clinton, MD, Wilbert Atkinson (Beatrice) of Greenville, NC; a son/grandson, Albert Benson, Jr.(Amy) of Hiisborough, NC; a god-daughter, Bertha Gaye of Greenville, NC; a special friend, James (Pete) Dixon of Simpson, NC; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
